For most of the guests onboard flight AK5106 to Kota Kinabalu, it was just a regular early Thursday morning.
What they didn’t know was that they were about to be part of a record-breaking event.
A keen eye would notice cheeky giggles and knowing looks, murmurs of excitement as well as several people dressed in “MMM” shirts. Hmm, something was definitely up. But then again, it’s morning so anyone would forgive the dazed looks and constant yawns.
Another suspecting person was passenger/sales and marketing director Francis Wong who wondered out loud, “Is that Malaysia Book of Records ah?” Other guests shrugged as they settled down in their seats properly.
Then, just as the flight was about to take off, something happened. People started fussing about, and the cabin crew was exceptionally excited as their crew head announced that there would be a special guest on board, Tourism Malaysia Chairman Datuk Ahmad Shah Hussein Tambakau.
He announced: “Each and every one of you here on this flight is about to be part of history today; you are about to witness the first-ever in-flight concert!”
On top of that, he added, this would be a record-breaking feat which will be witnessed by the Malaysia Book of Records, as flight AK5106 on August 8 would play host to a live concert with performers singing at 11,583m (38,000ft) in the air.
Without further ado, as excited cheers burst in the air, the concert started.
Local favourite band Shadow Puppet Theatre made their way to the front, guitar strums and vocals ready to sing feel-good head-bopping songs, and phones were immediately whipped out to capture the event as it unfolded.
As the passengers were on cloud nine (pun intended), relishing in the moment of being part of Malaysia’s first in-flight concert, a performance by Malaysian superstar and artiste Ayda Jebat followed as she began belting out her hit pop song “Pencuri Hati”, as guests clapped and sang along. She then belted out a Chinese hit number “Xin Tai Ruan”, and then crowd favourite “Temberang”.
Imagine that, a scene typically observed out on the streets (and on land) is being replicated up in the air on an AirAsia flight!
And it wasn’t just music, there was also a lucky draw onboard where lucky passengers got to take home a bag of goodies. Lucky passengers were selected at random, and we managed to grab quick photos of their gleeful faces:
Two very delightful faces at one of the back rows clearly showed that they had a good time, so we had to ask them a couple of questions.
travel360.com: Did you know that there was something special happening on this flight?
PHC: I did see the video recorders and speakers, but I thought there was a concert in Sabah, not on a plane! [laughs]
HJ: No, not at all! I just thought it was a regular flight!
travel360.com: What are your thoughts on the event just now?
PHC: It was very good, and it made this trip less boring! This has definitely been an unforgettable flight.
HJ: Very happening, entertaining, exciting … plus I got to see Ayda Jebat! I’m a fan!
travel360.com: How do you feel about being part of history today?
PHC: I feel good! I am actually looking forward to more in the future.
HJ: Oh, it was very unexpected and thrilling. It’s memorable, and it’s definitely a once-in-a-lifetime experience!
And as for Mr Francis Wong who had his suspicions about the Malaysia Book of Records uniforms, he responded by saying with a laugh, “I thought they were going to record something in Sabah, not on a plane!”
Post-concert and post-adrenaline, it was official:
The record is set: Minggu Muzik Malaysia 2019 has been inducted into the Malaysia Book of Records for the Highest Altitude Live Music Performance!
Once landed, flight guests also walked away with a certificate in recognition of being part of this extraordinary event, a free VIP zone pass to the MMM 2019 finale concert on 14-15 September, as well as 20% discount on personalised MMM concert shirts.
Clearly, this event has not only been unforgettable for the passengers on board, but it has also served to bring Malaysian music to greater heights — literally!
