I was also handed a towel that was infused with lemongrass that further elevated my mood signifying the beginning of my holiday on the island of Phuket.
I would later discover that this fragrance was Keemala’s Signature Scent, a combination of West Indian Sandalwood, clove, ylang ylang, kaffir lime and coriander specifically created by Siam Botanicals. These ingredients are calming and soothing, creating an impressionable aroma in and around the resort that I could not get enough of.
Walking around the lobby, I was mesmerizsed by the tile work that Keemala had commissioned for the lobby. The hieroglyphic-style design tells the story of the four groups of fictitious ancient Phuket settlers. The design element of the villas are also based on these groups of people.
On this occasion I was booked into the Tent Pool Villa, inspired by the ‘Khon-Jorn’, a tribe of wanderers, which I thought perfectly fitted my lifestyle as a traveller. As I approached my villa, I could see parts of the private pool already beckoning me for a swim to escape the tropical heat. But alas, I was intrigued with the design of the villa and decided to head in to inspect my abode for the next two days.
With its soft lighting, the 140m² room already had a peaceful quality to it and the dark furnishings only enhanced the relaxing mood that the space will put you in. Upon closer inspection, I noticed that some of the furniture were made to look like luggage, further playing on the nomadic theme. Walking to the bathroom, which was just as equally large as my bedroom, I found a stand-alone bathtub and monsoon shower and outdoor shower. Just a note, the toiletry has also been infused with local herbs making each trip to the shower a therapeutic experience for me.
Each of the villas has a different design and I would recommend just taking a walk around the resort just to admire the architecture. And of course, it gives you an excuse to return again and again until you have stayed at all four of the villas, with each one providing a different experience.
By the time I had finished unpacking and exploring my room, I decided to head to the resort’s dedicated restaurant, Mala Restaurant, for dinner. I was impressed with the options available to guests including Thai, Indian, Western, and there’s also healthier food options under the Spa Menu. The last thing I had expected was to have Indian food in Thailand but Chef Sunil highly recommended the Indian menu for the night and I happily obliged.
As Chef Sunil’s creation drew closer to my table, I could smell the fragrance of the spices. The dishes that I had that night included the butter chicken and lamb vindaloo, both were rich and creamy that went well with the naan bread and saffron rice, which I used to scoop up every bit of the sauce. It was simply divine and I would recommend anyone who enjoys spicy food from the Indian menu when they are visiting Keemala.
After resting my tummy, I decided to go for a swim in my private pool. It was certainly a beautiful night with the full moon appearing just behind the cloud and the town of Kamala on the horizon. It was such a romantic setting and the only regret I had was not bringing my partner along but that gives me an excuse to return to Keemala once more!
The next day, I decided to head over to Mala Spa and was recommended the Harmonizing Massage. As the name of the massage suggests, this particular massage is used to calm the mind and balance the body. And once again, the four tribes were used here, but in this instance they were the names of the signature blends. I was tempted to choose based on the villa that I was staying, but after taking whiffs of all four blends I decided to go with the Pa-Ta-Pea blend that was made using lemongrass, ginger and plai (a native Thai root herb). I could hardly stay awake during the session as the massage put me into a state of bliss, as if all my pressure points had been deactivated.
Keemala’s approach to hospitality is providing luxury that is imbued with authentic Thai-ness, from the architecture to the scent that is found at the resort. This is the epitome of Thai luxury and its exceptional service that leaves guest yearning for more.
