Dinner with a Plot Twist

Fans of theatre and food can rejoice as Best in The World TV food show host, Razif Hashim has teamed up with Copper Restaurant to kick off his new experiential theatre show Murder at the Masquerade. Written, directed and starring Razif, the show is his first attempt at marrying his love for food and theatre under his newly formed company Wayang Kitchen. 

The story revolves around the death of a wealthy prominent Tan Sri who owns a chain of farms and restaurants in Kuala Lumpur. He mysteriously dies at the dinner party he throws, which leaves the audience with the murder suspects in the room. While the detective investigates the crime scene with the audience, important clues will unravel throughout the six-course dinner and the audience will eventually unmask the mysterious murderer. Serving modern European food with a local twist, this pop-up experience will only be in town for two shows – 29 and 30 November 2019 from 8pm to 10pm.

“While murder mysteries have been done by many theatre companies in Kuala Lumpur, this collaboration between Copper and Wayang Kitchen is inspired by the need to spread the message about good local produce. The stories revolve around Malaysian farms that grow quality products that we often take for granted. The murders revolve around the dishes that feature the flares of these quality ingredients. Paired with murder and humorous characters trying to prove their innocence, this collaboration aims to tickle your fancy, tastebuds and humour all in one sitting,” says Razif.

In line with their annually hosted themed dinners, Copper, led by husband and wife team Chef Chai Chun Boon and Zeehan Zahari, will once again expand their creativity in the world of gastronomy through the upcoming collaboration with Wayang Kitchen.  If in previous years, we’ve witnessed exotic cross cultural cuisines being presented, vintage Chinese teas paired with contemporary European cuisine and even fantastical food and drinks crafted to reflect movies scenes and characters, this year, with an engaging and multisensory theater concept, the pair will be putting together both food and drinks that will not just nourish diners but will be woven into the whole Murder Mystery production, breaking dining norms in the most exciting ways. 

Trained under world-renowned Michelin starred restaurants and chefs like Oud Sluis in the Netherlands, ABaC in Barcelona, Santi by Santamaria and Pollen by Jason Atherton in Singapore, Chef Chai continues to live by a spirit of conviviality in the heart of his cooking, transforming in-season ingredients into edgy dishes with a myriad of flavor, textures, and aromas that deviates from the mainstream tenets of gastronomy.

Fresh off his recent collaboration with English director/theatremaker Hester Welch in an experimental devised theatre piece entitled The Food Play (performed once in KL and once in Kuching at the WAK festival), Razif is no stranger to producing and acting in theatre shows in Kuala Lumpur. While many know him as the food guy in Media Prima’s Best in the World, Razif has always been passionate about theatre and cultivating growth in this industry. From contributing to free acting classes under the Ftalent community to producing moving theater pieces like We Are Human under Theaterfugee, Wayang Kitchen aims to collaborate with more restaurants or cafes in the future who share the same passion in food and arts.
