2. Beach Hopping

Rawai Beach

Patong Beach is the first that comes to mind but move away from this famous but congested beachfront and be astonished by a plethora of other beaches that will leave you gobsmacked and, often deserted too. Kata, Surin, Karon, Kamala and Panwa beaches are just some of the more famous ones but if you hire a motorbike and travel the length and breadth of the island, you’ll find powder-white beaches lapped by azure waters at Laem Singh, Ya Nui, Nai Harn, Mai Khao, Sai Khaew and Rawai beaches. So many choices, so few bikinis to wear!

3. Phuket Night Markets

Phuket Sunday Street Market

Malls may be bright and swanky but for a truly immersive experience of the local culture, a trip to the night market is mandatory. Phuket offers many such night markets where tourists can savour authentic dishes or stock up on handcrafted souvenirs and gifts for a fraction of the price. Phuket Sunday Street Market at Thalang Road is popular for Thai food and desserts, clothes, souvenirs and gadgets. Chillva Market at Yaowarat Road attracts a young crowd stocking up on funky apparel, shoes and costume jewellery. Phuket Naka Weekend Market near Central Festival is often compared to Chatuchak Market for its size and sheer diversity of products. Most of these night markets feature local bands entertaining the crowds with Thai rock and pop numbers while you eat, shop, eat, shop…repeat.

4. Chalong Bay Rum Distillery

Brewed from locally sourced organic sugarcane juice, Chalong Bay Rum Distillery produces handcrafted fine spirits using traditional distillation methods in French copper vats, making it one of Thailand’s finest rum makers. With a minimum maturation of eight months, the rum produced here offers truly tropical flavours such as lemongrass, Thai sweet basil, cinnamon, kaffir lime and lime. Don’t just swig from a bottle but go visit the distillery located in Chalong Bay for intoxicating insights into how rum is distilled. Sign up for the cocktail workshop and dine on garden cuisine paired with finely crafted tipples made from Chalong Bay Rum. Don’t forget to buy a bottle or two. Or three.
