Xaman-Ha
Playa del Carmen, named "Xaman-Ha" by the ancient
Mayans, has now become one of the most important tourist spots along the entire
382 kilometer Mayan Riviera, but has retained its picturesque atmosphere. It has
all of the tourist services as that of any large resort. With its relaxed way of
life and romantic nights, along with its numerous activities, geographic
location, has turned Playa del Carmen into an ideal vacation destination.
Quinta Avenida (Fifth Avenue), the pedestrian walkway, is lined with all kinds
of handicraft shops and boutiques where you can purchase unlimited items. An
abundant selection of excellent restaurants, cafes and coffee shops offer you a
wide range of choices from local to international menus. The sidewalk cafes,
with their colorful umbrellas, local musical bands and folkloric street shows
help enliven your Happy Hour, which in some establishments is 5 hours long!
The relaxed and casual atmosphere continues into the beautiful white sanded
beaches with its turquoise-blue waters. It really does make it a dream-come-true
for vacationers.

What To See And Do
The Coast of Quintana Roo: As you travel the
coast south of Cancun towards Tulum, the panorama is endlessly varied. Places
like Xcaret, Akumal, and the natural aquarium at Xel-Ha, offer unique
attractions. Deserted beaches like Chemuyil, and Boca Paila beyond Tulum, invite
you to stop and swim in splendid isolation. For true adventure, keep going south
until you get to the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve, a truly pristine area of
coastal marshlands, deep jungle and spectacular coral reefs that is considered a
Global Heritage by the United Nations.
The southern cost of Quintana Roo is under development for tourism. However,
unlike up north, this area will not be one filled with malls and five star
hotels. Development here is planned along low density guidelines, more for
nature lovers who enjoy staying in rustic cabins hidden in a forest of palm
trees and gazing at the ocean while local fishermen bring their catch ashore.
From the coastal villages of Majahual and Xcalak, visitors can get to the
Chinchorro Banks, an immense coral reef, cemetery to countless of colonial
times.
Every day is a new adventure for curious travelers who roam the highways and
byways of Quintana Roo.
