Waimea
Waimea is located on the western side of the island of Kauai, where the small village of Waimea rests along its’ shores. This sleepy little town was once the original capital of Kauai, but seems to have been lost in time. It’s laid back and quiet, and doesn’t have a lot of action, but if you’re looking for the real Hawaii away from the crowds, noise and large resorts, Waimea Bay will fit the bill. This region is home to one of Hawaii’s most beautiful natural wonders – Waimea Canyon (called the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific.) Other nearby attractions include Kokee State Park and Salt Pond Beach Park, which is a great place to swim and snorkel. A few miles south of Waimea Bay is the historic town of Hanapepe. This rustic town was once one of the island’s largest towns and it’s so picturesque that it was used in the mini-series, “The Thornbirds.” It has shops selling local arts and crafts, art galleries, and is reportedly home to one of Kauai’s best restaurants. Recreational activities near Waimea Bay include hiking, mountain biking, fishing, and surfing, swimming and snorkeling.
