Tourist Parks
Xcaret (prounounced with a "sh") is 4 miles South. It is
a museum, an aquarium and archeological zone that shows some of the
representative characteristics of the Mayan culture. A botanical garden
with local species, underground rivers, beaches, dolphins you can swim
with, food with flavor of the south, uniquely beautiful birds, and a
light and sound show representing part of the Mexican identity. This is
evidence of the great effort that is put into making Xcaret a place
filled with magic. The respect shown for nature is very satisfying since
visitors here are in close contact with nature without disturbing the
enviornment, the basis for its conservation.
Xel- Ha 34 miles south. A park in the interconnected freshwater lagoons
from the natural aquarium. Xel-Ha is the breeding ground for scores of
tropical fish species, including some notably large parrotfish. Fish, as
well as coral formations can be viewed through the clear water from the
platform above the rocky limestone shore of the lagoons. Snorkeling is a
good reason to visit. On the West Side of the highway and close to the
park entrance is a group of restored Mayan ruins.
Xpu- Ha 15 miles South- In the Mayan language, Xpu-Ha means tideland of
two waters, mixture of fresh and salt. Although this area has always
been here, it has only recently been turned into a park. Since the
developer's priority is to preserve the ecosystem, occupancy is limited.
Go early. This absolutely beautiful place houses birds, snakes fish and
a large variety of fauna. Transparent turquoise waters make snorkeling,
diving, kakaking, windsurfing, boogieboarding and other water sports an
unforgettable experience. You can also take trips in a catamaran along
the Mayan Riviera or rent a bike and ride through the jungle paths,
hanging bridges and manglescapes. Along the way you will find two
restaurants and four snack stations conveniently located. Snorkeling and
diving introduction, cave or cenote diving tours are also available.
Tres Rios 10 minutes north of Playa is this very new park. Three jungle
rivers are waiting for you to be explored by canoe. Or discover the
estuary in a kayak. A bicycle ride throught the jungle is an
exhilarating experience comparable to snorkeling or diving in the
amazing fresh water cenotes. There is also a very beautiful beach.
