Mayan Jungle
Sian Ka'an (The cradle of heaven) Biosphere Reserve.
Named by the ancient Maya, this area contains the legendary Puerto de
Vigia Chico (Small Lookout). With its old lighthouse and Caribbean
charm, Sian Ka'an welcomes guests on the portal of the greatest Mayan
mysteries. Not far away in the emerald green jungle lies the abandoned
citadel of Chunyaxche. Visitors can wander in almost total freedom among
the majestic buildings that still show the drawings and religious
carvings of the vanished civilization.
Sian Ka'an has been preserved intact as a natural wildlife refuge. The
park's boundaries protect more than 350 different species of tropical
and marine birds. Large carnivorous mammals like the jaguar, puma,
ocelotand lynx still thrive and reproduce, coexisting in their life
cycle with spider monkeys and whitetail deer. Manatees still swim freely
in lagoons and inlets undisurbed by man or machine.
Tres Garantias Explore age-old Mayan archaeological ruins. Dozens of
them lie deep in the reserve, hidden by curtains of dense vegetation.
The few inhabitants in the area carefully husband their beloved jungle,
harvesting what they can from it and running small hunting camps.
Dos Aguadas More than a run through the jungle, this is a voyage to the
limits of your imagination. There is still much to be discovered in our
primal forests. Experience for yourself the sensation of seeing a silent
Mayan city, buried in the coastal jungles of a far off land.
